Thou Gleaming Spark Divine

Or, Angels in Electropop Relief

Whenever shuffle pulls out “Pass This On” by The Knife, I think of Klimt’s “Beethoven Frieze”. Their high, chant-like refrain (first comes in at around 2:10) has an opiate spirituality which seems to make it another audio-manifestation of “The Choir of Angels in Paradise” in the last segment of the frieze (below).

Gustav Klimt, “Beethovenfries”, 1902 (painting, Österreichische Galerie Belvedere, Vienna).

At least, that’s what I’ve always thought. Klimt’s chosen soundtrack for the frieze would’ve been Beethoven’s Ninth, but The Knife is punchier and boasts a bit more pathos (“Ode to Joy” just doesn’t do it for me). Yep,
