Murmurs

The voice you know best may speak
too softly to be understood,
and you will love it all the more

for the lilt and flow of tone,
consonants mostly lost to vowels
and liquid diction so familiar.

Remember the murmur, not the words.
Carry the rhythm of the speech
in a safe place behind your ears,

to be animated and danced to
when all alone you feel a loved one
speak from too far away to be heard.
